mobile technology and mine maintenance

   16 May 2014

The utilisation and acceptance of some mobile technology may not be as advanced in the mining sector as other industries, however this doesn’t mean there isn’t significant cost saving to be realised by adopting and integrating mobile technology to improve work process.

According to a recent article published by iTnews, productivity gains in the order of 10% have been achieved at one Western Australian mining operation after the introduction of mobile dashboards. Brett Winterford writes “Fortescue Metals Group is shaping to reap some $30 million in annual cost savings after pushing the real-time reporting of productivity data out to the mobile devices of its field operations team”. The article infers that putting real-time relevant information at the fingertips of supervisors has enabled them to recognise and rectify issues mid-shift, resulting in better decision making and improved efficiency.

The same potential principles and benefits can be applied to the maintenance function. Providing maintenance supervisors and tradespeople with mobile access to real time work and equipment related information, will minimise job delays resulting in higher equipment availability and lower costs.

There are however, challenges to overcome before these benefits can be realised.

Data Collation – Numerous data sources will inevitably have to be collated and compiled to provide meaningful information to the end user. Of particular importance is work order information, equipment monitoring and status data.

Mobile Network Infrastructure – Providing a reliable mobile network in remote and underground mining operations can be expensive to establish and maintain.

IT Policies and Procedures – Data security and protection protocols will need to be developed and implemented, together with criteria on the selection and use of mobile devices.

Work Management – Work management processes will need to be redesign and implemented through training and change management controls.

The implementation of a mobile solution however has additional benefits for the maintenance function, including;

  • Reduced data entry
  • Improved safety and communication
  • Increased quality and control
